Meet the Admissions Staff!
Leah Belcher- Admissions Coordinator
Job at HGSE: As the Admissions Coordinator, my job is to manage all off-campus recruitment and admitted student events. I also help answer inquiries from prospective applicants, track official transcripts for admitted students, and maintain the admissions website.
My favorite lunch spot in Harvard Square: Definitely Flour Bakery; everything there is delicious.
My favorite day trip in New England: Northampton, MA.
My favorite childhood book: Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
James Christensen- Business Analyst and Data Administrator
Job at HGSE: I’m the data and tech person in Admissions, so I make sure our system supports the work we do as an office and our online application works for prospective students. I also handle reporting and data analysis to assess our efforts and find areas for opportunity or improvement.
Favorite lunch spot in Harvard Square: I haven’t eaten a Darwin’s sandwich that I didn’t like.
Why I love being a part of the HGSE community: HGSE is a place where everyone cares and works hard, but also makes time for fun and lets people be themselves.
On the weekends you can find me: Hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Julie Deland- Director of Admissions
Job at HGSE: I came to HGSE 18 years ago and have spent the last 12 years on the admissions team. As the director, I manage a team of 9 admissions professionals who work to support 2 doctoral programs in education, 13 masters of education programs, and 1 certificate of advanced study in counseling. I also work with HGSE’s Associate Dean for Enrollment and Student Services on enrollment and management strategy.
Why I love being a part of the HGSE community: For me, it’s all about the people – the collegiality, our shared passion for and commitment to improving education and opportunity for all children, and the care and kindness we show to one another on a regular basis. The HGSE community is one of a kind and it continues to keep me both excited about and thankful for the opportunity I have to be a part of it.
My favorite day trip in New England: In the summer, we love heading down to Marion, MA to visit my in-laws – grabbing breakfast at a delicious local bakery and then spending the day swimming in the ocean, going out on the boat, making sandcastles, and having picnic lunches on the lawn.
Ernald Furxhi- Associate Director of Admissions
Job at HGSE: I search the world for individuals who are committed to improving lives through education, and ensure they’re aware of HGSE’s unique advantages and how to attain them.
My favorite on-campus event/tradition: Askwith forums is one of my favorites. I appreciate the openness, willingness to discuss tough topics and honesty of the speakers and faculty who facilitate many of the discussions.
On the weekends you can find me: Being the typical suburban parent who complains about driving the kids to soccer and dance practices, but who wouldn’t have it any other way.
My favorite Gutman Café offering: The $1.25 coffee refills.
Jourdan Hafen- Admissions Assistant
Job at HGSE: As the Admissions Assistant, you can usually find me behind the front desk in our Longfellow Hall office working on various projects.
On the weekends you can find me: curled up with a book
Favorite Gutman Cafe offering: hibiscus berry iced tea
Favorite childhood book: Matilda by Roald Dahl
Christine Lombardi- Admissions Office Administrator
Job at HGSE: I am the Office Administrator, which means that I provide support for lots of different projects in the office. In the fall and spring, I work closely with my colleagues to create virtual and on-campus events and advertise them on the web and via email. I also put together the budget and work on most of the financial projects for the office.
Favorite activity in Cambridge or Boston: We have a great bike share system that is expanding. Most nice weekends you can find me and my husband biking around the city checking out different events and festivals. I would also say that the city has a great live music scene with tons of different venues.
My favorite on-campus event: I’m a fan of the community events like the Halloween trick or treating. Different offices decorate tables and the children of faculty, staff, and students trick or treat. There are always so many adorable costumes and it brings together people from all parts of HGSE
My advice to prospective students: Don’t be afraid to ask questions – we are here to help!
Emily Mendes- Assistant Director of Admissions
Job at HGSE: I manage our on-campus and virtual recruitment events and our social media presence (including this blog!). I also manage the Student Admissions Ambassador Program and enjoy getting to know our current students.
My favorite lunch spot in Harvard Square: This is tricky as Harvard Square has so many delicious options! Does ice cream count as lunch? If so, I love heading to Honeycomb Creamery during the summer months!
On the weekends you can find me: Hanging out with my dog and my husband! We love going for long walks around the city and exploring new restaurants. Boston/Cambridge has such a great array of restaurants and we love trying out new spots.
My advice to prospective students: The admissions process can be intimidating but try to stay focused on fit and whether HGSE is the right place for you to accomplish your goals.
Youlim Yai- Senior Associate Director of Admissions
Job at HGSE: Try to figure out how to incorporate more food into all of our office activities… 😊 In seriousness, in addition to the regular counselor duties, I am responsible for all the operations work of the office. Among other things, this means I’m in charge of making sure all the admission decisions go out in March!
On the weekends you can find me: I’m a cinephile and love watching movies when they’re in the theater! In particular, I like catching the first movie showings on Saturday mornings at Kendall Theater, which tends to show the smaller, indie films.
Favorite Childhood Book(s): So many! However, I made sure to bring my copy of the entire Anne of Green Gables series with me to college because I couldn’t bear to leave them home.
My advice to prospective students: Focus on helping the admissions committee know your authentic self and how your time at HGSE will help you in reaching your immediate and long-term objectives. Applicants who spend too much time caught up in the prestige of the Harvard University name and writing a Statement of Purpose of what they think the committee wants to hear tend to be weaker candidates overall. Instead, focus on your fit for your program of interest, and also how the program fits with your academic and career goals.
